Demong Defends Combined Crown
Demong, who had sprained his left ankle Friday while Telemark skiing at Steamboat Ski Resort on an off day, led the 90-meter jumping early in the morning Wednesday at Howelsen Hill, then returned at dusk to win the 10-km conclusion to the combined championship at Romick Rodeo Arena by nearly a minute over Lodwick. The bronze medal went to Matt Dayton (Breckenridge, CO). To beat the warmth of the day, organizers scheduled the jumping to start with the trial round at 6:30 a.m. The race began in 45-degree weather at 5:30 p.m. “I feel a lot better now than I thought I was when I woke up this morning, that’s for sure,” Demong said. “These were tough conditions. The snow was corn snow, like on the mountain, kinda slushy and it was a little cold.” He started the Gundersen format race 12 seconds ahead of Lodwick, a three-time Olympian who was looking for his sixth U.S. combined championship, his fifth in front of his family and friends in Steamboat. Lodwick caught him by the 2-km mark and they skied together until Lodwick apparently hooked a tip of one ski in the final two Ks, and Demong skied away for the victory. “I think it took Todd a while to get warmed up. We played cat ‘n’ mouse for about nine Ks – I’d ski a K or two, then pull over and tell him to pull [lead] but he wouldn’t, or couldn’t…so, I’d go for another K or two and tell him again to lead, but he wouldn’t again. “Finally, with about two Ks, or maybe a K and a half, I decided to push it and I was going. Apparently, Todd hooked a tip – I didn’t know it until I got near the finish line and he wasn’t with me,” Demong said. He said his ankle didn’t bother him because after turning it Friday, he took it easy and had some physical therapy to re-strengthen the ankle. |
